Dimension Films, Inc. was founded in 1962 by Gary Goldsmith and Ed Shuman. Goldsmith is a producer, writer, director, and educator, who taught film production in the School of Cinematic Arts at USC from 1995 to 2009. Goldsmith’s films have won a total of 124 festival awards, including 56 major prizes.
The Dimension Films Collection includes 16mm educational films on topics ranging from science to career choices, everyday life in cities and rural areas, diversity, family issues, sex and dating, interpersonal relationships, animals and more. The films are designed to educate young children and teenagers, created to help them form opinions and learn about the world around them. A notable inclusion is the feature film “Saturday Morning,” directed by USC alum Kent Mackenzie along with its 19 companion shorts under the title “The Searching Years”. The film was progressive for its time, depicting teenagers talking candidly about difficult topics, including sex, racism, and family relationships. “Saturday Morning” is available on 35mm film. The collection also includes promotional materials and study guide companions for teachers, which outline how to best use the films in a classroom setting and production books, correspondence and photographs detailing many of the films.
